llms.txt
A markdown file at a site's root that indexes its content for AI models — robots.txt's cousin, written for machines that read rather than follow links.
01What it means
llms.txt is a community convention from llmstxt.org: a file at /llms.txt that gives AI models a curated, markdown-formatted index of a website — what the site is, what is on it, and where the substantive content lives. Where robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch, llms.txt tells language models what is worth reading. An expanded companion, llms-full.txt, can carry the fuller index.
For a model assembling an answer about your company, llms.txt is retrieval, not persuasion: structured facts it can trust instead of whatever it improvises from pages built to charm humans. This site publishes one at /llms.txt, generated from the same content modules as the HTML pages so it cannot drift from the site it describes.
The format is deliberately small — a heading, a blockquote summary, then links with one-line descriptions. It costs an afternoon to produce and nothing to maintain if you generate it from your content source.
02Why it matters for buyers
- —It is how your story reaches AI answers: models comparing vendors quote what they can verify, and an llms.txt index is verifiable by construction — it is your own site talking.
- —Cheap to ship, hard to get wrong: generated from the same source as your pages, it cannot contradict them the way a stale brochure can.
- —It is checkable: our free agent-readiness check looks for llms.txt on any public site — yours or a vendor's.
03Common questions
Is llms.txt an official standard?
No — it is a community convention (llmstxt.org) that AI crawlers and assistants increasingly honor, the way robots.txt grew from convention to norm. Adopting it is low-risk: it adds a file, changes nothing else, and is ignored gracefully by everyone else.
Does llms.txt replace robots.txt or sitemap.xml?
No — all three coexist. robots.txt governs crawling, sitemaps list URLs for search engines, and llms.txt explains content to language models in prose they can use directly.
What belongs in an llms.txt file?
The essential pages with honest one-line descriptions, written for a reader that cannot see your design, plus pointers to structured access where you offer it (APIs, an MCP server). Ours lists pages, services, case studies, writing, study guides, and tools.
